Coalition Conundrum: The BJP's Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs
– (2001, reprinted July 30, 2007)
In this book the author traces the events between 1996 and 2001, and how the BJP-led coalition governments fared in the political, economic, national security and defense, and social arenas. A further challenge was the internal criticism and pressures by the RSS and its affiliates who felt that the BJP-coalition was reneging on a variety of promises. Complicating the scenario further were the global economic, political, and military pressures that made the guiding of a large and heterogeneous nation as impossible as getting a camel through the eye of a needle.
This book contains five chapters. The first four chapters deal with the political, economic, national security and defense, and social spheres and how the BJP-led coalition fares in them. The fifth and concluding chapter summarizes for the reader the challenges that the nation and the Sangh Parivar will face in the future. The concluding part of the chapter analyzes the influence of two men on modern Indian politics and society – Gandhiji and Nehru – and how many Indians, including the Sangh’s members, shadow-battle these two men’s ideas and personalities.
